AISCE (“ace”)

Academy of Integrated Studies and Community Engagement

AISCE (“ace”) is a service learning program for students entering 9th-12th grades that integrates community service with informal collaborative seminars emphasizing discussion, exploration and reflection. (View brochure here.) Enrolled students will participate in both:

Community service – Students work in a variety of settings around the East Bay with disadvantaged and special needs youth. They learn to engage the children with sports activities, reading, art – even gardening. Students will also receive conflict resolution training in order to best support the children. Each course also offers training/orientation on community engagement. Service will take place at several locations around the East Bay and will be supported by teachers and classroom discussion and exploration. 2014 Service Partnerships are described at bottom of page.

Collaborative Seminars – Taught by dynamic PHS faculty, who design creative, engaging, hands-on curriculum for a small learning community, the courses (details below) provide oversight, mentoring and spirited inquiry in small group meetings. These sessions are geared to foster empathy, self-directed learning and critical thinking skills across disciplines as diverse as the social and physical sciences, nutrition, economics, civics, music, arts and literature. Participating students will receive training on how to work with children of diverse backgrounds with a variety of needs and will develop insight, character, leadership, social skills and a greater awareness of the world around them. AISCE is not for credit, but students will receive up to 45 hours of community service per session.

SESSION 1  June 13 - 24             SESSION 2  June 27 - July 9             SESSION 3  July 11 - 23

Farm to Table Journey

Session 1 - Tues, Weds, Thurs 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Students begin a journey from their own dinner table to local Bay Area farms and into the PHS kitchen to create farm to table meals. During their two weeks, they will explore farming, seasonality, economics and agriculture politics that inspire sourcing great food locally. They will visit local farmers such as: Alexis Koeford at Soul Food Farms in Vacaville, Farmer Al at Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood to source ingredients. At the end of each week, participants will prepare for their own farm to table meal and share with local people in need.

30 hours of service           $600 (Includes transportation for field trips)

Political Leadership Challenge

Session 2 & 3 -  Weds, Thurs, Fri 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Sat 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

You’ve seen political campaigns on the news. Bands playing, stirring speeches, balloons and confetti all make up the spectacle that is American politics. Join in the political fun. This AISCE experience has two components. First, you will join your peers in taking direct action to identify and address a local problem. Second, you will participate in local campaigns getting an insider’s look at how campaigns are run, learning about local and national candidates and making connections with the politicians that are active in our community.

40 hours of service            $600 (Includes transportation for field trips)
